Ground Bird’s eye chilli 🌶️ is a small but fiery type of dried chilli pepper ground to a fine powder. They’re usually 2–4 cm long, slender, and pointy—kind of like little red or green darts. Don’t let their size fool you: they pack serious heat. They’re widely used in Southeast Asian cooking (Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian), often in curries, stir-fries, dipping sauces, and sambals. The flavour isn’t just about heat—it’s sharp, fresh, and slightly fruity, which is why they brighten up dishes so well.
On the Scoville scale (which measures spiciness), bird’s eye chillies usually rate between 50,000–100,000 SHU—hotter than jalapeños but not as intense as habaneros.
