Description

In South Africa just as in many parts of the world the term "Dana Jeru" (or dhana jiru / dhana jeera) refers to a traditional spice blend made of roasted and ground Coriander (Dhana) and Cumin (Jeera or Jiru) seeds. "Dhana" means Coriander (sometimes spelled Dhania or Dhana), and "Jiru" (or Jeera) means Cumin. Thus, "dhana jiru/jeera" literally translates to coriander-cumin. It’s a simple yet fragrant spice blend, typically made by toasting coriander and cumin seeds separately to bring out their flavors, then grinding them together. This blend is a staple in Gujarati and wider Indian cuisine, used in dals, curries (shaaks), snacks, and vegetable dishes. Commonly prepared in home kitchens and stored as part of the everyday "masala dabba" (spice tin) for convenience and fresh flavor. Many family recipes use a 1:½ ratio by weight (e.g., ½ cup coriander to ¼ cup cumin) or equal weights; by volume, some use twice as much coriander. Used in a wide range of dishes like to flavour vegetables, bean, pulse and lentil curries, also to flavour all meat, poultry and fish curries and stews. Used to thicken vegetable soups and to garnish rice dishes.
