Description

Himalayan salt is a type of rock salt mined from the ancient Salt Range in Pakistan, near the Himalayan mountains, which has a distinctive pink color due to trace minerals like iron oxide. Similar to table salt, it is about 98% sodium chloride but contains trace amounts of other minerals, giving it a reputation for being a natural, unprocessed salt. It is used in cooking, seasoning, and as a decorative item, though its health benefits are often overstated compared to regular table salt.
Mined from ancient sea beds, the salt beds were formed around 250 million years ago, covered by lava, ice, and snow, which protected them from modern pollutants. The signature light to dark pink color comes from the wide variety of trace minerals, particularly iron oxide.
While it contains trace amounts of minerals like potassium, calcium, and iron, its composition is very similar to table salt. It can be used in place of table salt for cooking, baking, and seasoning.
Decorative and cosmetic: Himalayan salt is also sold in the form of salt lamps and is used in cosmetic products and bath soaks. Regular table salt is often fortified with iodine, a mineral essential for health, which Himalayan salt may lack. Many health claims, such as regulating blood sugar, promoting respiratory health, and aiding detoxification, are not well-supported by scientific research.
