Description
Ground turmeric is a golden-orange powder made by drying and grinding the rhizome (root) of the turmeric plant, a relative of ginger. Known for its warm, earthy, and slightly bitter flavor and vibrant color, it is a common spice in Indian and Southeast Asian cooking, used in curries, mustards, and other dishes for both flavor and color. The spice's active compound, curcumin, is also known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The rhizomes (underground stems) of the Curcuma longa plant are harvested and then typically boiled or steamed. After boiling, they are dried.
The dried turmeric is then ground into a fine, bright yellow-orange powder. Used to add color and flavor to curries, sauces, soups, rice dishes, and marinades.
Employed for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for its health-promoting properties. Added to mustard blends, cheeses, and butter, and can also be found in dietary supplements.
